5 Things Google Checks Before Sending Customers to a Local Business

Every time someone searches "bakery near me" or "AC repair in Pune," Google runs a quick but powerful check before deciding which businesses to show. Most local shops fail at least three of these checks — which is why they never appear in the results.

Here are the five signals Google looks for:

1

An Active, Complete Google Business Profile

Your GBP is the first thing Google checks. It needs to be claimed, verified, and complete — with your business name, category, address, phone number, hours, and at least a few photos. But "complete" isn't enough. Google also watches for activity. Are you responding to reviews? Posting updates? Adding new photos? An active profile signals that the business is open and engaged. A dormant one signals the opposite.

2

A Website With Your Location and Services

Google cross-checks your GBP against your website. If your website clearly states your location, services, and business name — and matches what's on your GBP — Google's confidence in your business goes up. No website? Your competitor with a basic one outranks you by default.

3

A Product or Service Catalogue

If someone searches "chocolate cake delivery in Bandra," Google tries to match that query to businesses that specifically offer chocolate cake. If your bakery has no catalogue, Google can't make that match — even if you bake the best chocolate cake in the city. A detailed catalogue means more keywords, more matches, more customers.

4

Genuine Customer Reviews

Reviews are social proof for Google, not just for customers. A business with 15 recent 4-star reviews will outrank one with 2 old reviews every time. Google also checks if you're responding to reviews — both positive and negative.

5

Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) Across the Web

If your business name is spelled differently on your GBP vs your website vs Justdial vs IndiaMART — Google notices the inconsistency and trusts you less. Keep your NAP identical everywhere your business is listed.
